Prostate cancer remains a very curable disease with excellent results from both surgery and radiation therapy and our aim is to ensure that patients receive optimal assessment and advice that is individualised and effective in providing adequate psychological, physical and social support during this difficult period.
Dr Paul Cozzi and Dr Peter Nash have pioneered nerve sparing and nerve grafting techniques in Australia, which gives patients a much better chance of recovery of erectile function. Dr Cozzi and Dr Nash have completed extensive training in Fellowship positions in urologic oncology in the USA.
Dr William Lynch has led the way in minimally invasive treatments for prostate cancer, including High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) and cryosurgery. The Prostate Cancer Institute is the only centre in Australia to offer cryosurgery. Dr Cozzi and Dr Lynch were involved in some of the earliest research into this technique in Australia and have published extensively on this topic.
Dr Joseph Bucci and Professor John Kearsley (Ph:02 9350 3943) both radiation therapists whom have received international training at centres of excellence and provide state of the art forms of radiation therapy in both the public and private hospitals which have been internationally validated as to their effectiveness.
Dr Joseph Bucci works in conjunction with another of our surgeons, Dr David Malouf, and together they been instrumental in the establishment of the Brachytherapy Programme, including low dose seed brachytherapy and high dose rate brachytherapy at the Prostate Cancer Institute. This remarkable achievement has been recognised by the Cancer Institute of New South Wales with the only publicly funded seed programme in the state available at the Prostate Cancer Institute. Dr Bucci and Dr Malouf trained in North America and have had their technique internationally validated confirming that the quality of the implants is of the highest order.
Patients considering surgery are reviewed by our dedicated practice nurse who meets with all the patients considering surgery for prostate cancer to explain many of the issues surrounding the procedure. Our Practice Nurse will meet with you on the day to explain aspects of surgery and then is involved in their immediate post operative care as well as care once discharged from the hospital.
In addition to surgical and radiation oncology expertise we also have Dr Paul De Souza, a medical oncologist with a major interest in prostate cancer. Dr De Souza has access to the latest clinical trials and has a keen interest in newer treatment strategies and approaches.
We believe very strongly in the team approach to treatment and therefore patients are welcome to see any or all specialists from the different disciplines on the same day.
